About this deal

Helen became a Christian at university through the witness of friends. Are we making the most of opportunities to share the love of Christ and to speak about him?

In 1973 she returned to the UK for health reasons, settling in Northern Ireland, where she wrote several books.

During those first years, she also established a training center for nurses and opened a maternity ward. Through these years of hard work and struggle, the Lord revealed to Helen her si Lagerborg, Mary Beth, Though Lions Roar: The Story of Helen Roseveare: Missionary Doctor to the Congo, (Faith's Adventurers), ISBN 978-0-87508-663-7. Give Me This Mountain is a missionary autobiography by Dr. Helen Roseveare. In the 1940's, Helen graduated in medicine from University of Cambridge. She became a well-known missionary and was particularly respected for her work as part of the Heart of Africa Mission in Congo. Then in Hebrews 12:2 we read that Jesus, our great High Priest, finished the course. He finished the race that God had given to him, which was to die on the cross for you and for me. He got to the end. Remember how he cried out on the cross, “It is finished!” (John 19:30). Jesus didn’t stop before he finished the job that God had given him to save you and me. He said to God, “Not my will, but yours, be done” (Luke 22:42). Give Me This Mountain". worldmissionbooks.com. Archived from the original on 2016-12-21 . Retrieved 2016-12-09.

After completing her studies, Roseveare applied to WEC to be a medical missionary. In 1953, she went to the Congo, where she was assigned to the north-east provinces. [3] She built a combination hospital/ training center in Ibambi in the early 1950s, then relocated to Nebobongo, living in an old leprosy camp, where she built another hospital. After conflict with other staff at the hospital, she returned to England in 1958. [4] This past summer at a camp for teenage girls, I was giving three Bible studies on the life of David. We studied together how David was anointed as the future king and how he proved himself in the battle against Goliath. We looked at all his faithfulness in so many different directions. And then, toward the end of his reign, we read the story of Bathsheba. God graciously sent Nathan to him, and David repented. As a result of that, we have Psalm 51, and we have all the encouragement for our own hearts that if we truly repent of sin, God will forgive us. Thank God for that, yes. But why was there failure? And so near the end? Now in the UK you can’t do that! I haven’t found it so easy there. But I’ve had to learn that it doesn’t matter to God where he puts us. We have to learn to be consistent Christians and 100 percent in love with Jesus and fully committed to our deepest desire to be pleasing to him at all times, no matter where he places us. These three point to the past, the present, and the future testimony of my Christian life. One Thing I KnowDo I honestly take time to dwell with the Lord? Not as a visitor, not as a passing guest, but to dwell, to live in his temple. To live in his presence — to have nothing in my life that is not in the presence of the Lord. Have we really let him so into our lives that everything from now on that we do is done in the presence of Jesus with him as our companion? As I began to read this chapter, I realized that I knew the story — I had taught it to students in Africa. So I knew in a way what was coming, and yet I didn’t know the “Thus saith the Lord” verse. Suddenly I saw it coming. “Thus saith the Lord.” And I didn’t want it. I was scared. I thought, I don’t know what he’s going to say to me. I put my hand across it. But then I read this amazing verse that God was speaking to the kings of Judah, Israel, and Edom through his prophet Elisha. “Thus saith the Lord, make this valley full of ditches” (verse 16, KJV). God]understood not only my desperate misery but also my awakened desires and mixed up horror of emotional trauma. I knew that Philippians 4:19, “My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus,” was true on all levels, not just on a hyper-spiritual shelf where I had tried to relegate it. . . . He was actually offering me the inestimable privilege of sharing in some little way in the fellowship of His sufferings. She served in the Belgian Congo (later Zaire, now DRC) for 20 years, from 1953 to 1973, then had a long and fruitful ministry in writing and speaking. Early spiritual life

Despite her remarkable achievements, Dr Roseveare remained astonishingly humble. Her books are full of her honest struggles with pride, feelings of inadequacy and frustrations with her own impatience with the people around her. She remained honest throughout her life about her struggles, at times relating to other missionaries and seeking to put these right. She often learned through her mistakes the importance of prayer before and during clinics and surgical skills and ensuring that her own ego disappeared. CFP | Living Sacrifice: Willing to be Whittled as an Arrow | Helen Roseveare". www.christianfocus.com . Retrieved 2016-12-09. You no longer want Jesus only, but Jesus plus . . . plus respect, popularity, public opinion, success and pride. You wanted to go out with all the trumpets blaring, from a farewell-do that you organized for yourself with photographs and tape-recordings to show and play at home, just to reveal what you had achieved. You wanted to feel needed and respected. You wanted the other missionaries to be worried about how they’ll ever carry on after you’ve gone. You’d like letters when you go home to tell how much they realize they owe to you, how much they miss you. All this and more. Jesus plus. . . . No, you can’t have it. Either it must be “Jesus only” or you’ll find you have no Jesus. You’ll substitute Helen Roseveare. One of the major problems I had was in learning to live a consistent Christian life wherever God put me. I spent twenty years in Congo in Central Africa, where in many ways it was very easy to be a Christian — I was the only pale-skin among some eighty thousand dark-skinned people. Exhausted, Helen returned to England in 1958 for a furlough, during which time she received further medical training. One word became unbelievably clear, and that word was privilege. He didn’t take away pain or cruelty or humiliation. No! It was all there, but now it was altogether different. It was with him, for him, in him. He was actually offering me the inestimable privileged of sharing in some little way the edge of the fellowship of his suffering.

Now we will consider the second “one thing.” In Philippians 3:13 Paul writes, “I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do . . .” “One thing I do” is in the present tense — the present-active tense. “One thing I am doing. Forgetting what is behind, straining to what is ahead, I am pressing on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me.” Hosea 6:3 says, “Keep on keeping on.” That is a literal translation from my Swahili Bible — “Keep on keeping on.” Don’t give up; rather, follow on to know the Lord to the end. Jesus said, “You will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved” (Matthew 10:22).God broke through to her during a weekend retreat led by Dr. Graham Scroggie. During one of the sessions, Helen received the Lord’s grace with the firm conviction that her sins were forgiven. After the meeting, she went to see Dr. Scroggie to tell him all that had transpired. He opened her Bible and wrote a prayer based on Philippians 3:10 that foreshadowed the Lord’s work in her future. The writer to the Hebrews was writing to persecuted Jewish Christians. They were persecuted to the extent of being turned out of the temple. They’d lost all that had been dear to them through Old Testament days — temple worship, all the fine clothing of the high priest, and all the ordinances they had practiced. They were not even allowed to enter the temple courtyard.
