About this deal

Each reading practice session has a clear focus, so that the demands of the session do not overload the children’s working memory. The reading practice sessions have been designed to focus on three key reading skills:

In partnership with Collins we offer a full range of classroom resources and 250+ decodable Big Cat books fully matched to our progression. In the Autumn Term we teach phonics for up to 30 minutes a day with an emphasis on revising Phase 5 from Year 1 Summer Term planning. We ensure our Preschool pupils are well prepared to begin learning grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPCs) and blending in Reception. Children across Years 4 – 6 who need additional support will have regular 1:1 reading with decodable books. A sharing book. Your child will not be able to read this on their own. This book is for you both to read and enjoy together.

Alphabet sounds flashcards like these are specifically designed to teach children how to read through the use of phonemes and graphemes instead of memorising the individual letters. This follows the ideas behind the Letters and Sounds program by the Department for Education.

There are plenty of ways of making the Letters and Sounds program fun. Using alphabet sounds flashcards and turning your teaching into a game can be a great place to start. Our fully decodable reading scheme Rhino Readers aligns perfectly with Twinkl Phonics and also features the familiar characters of Kit, Sam and their family and friends that children will have met in their daily phonics lessons. We recommend that Rhino Readers is used alongside Twinkl Phonics. At Princes Risborough Primary, we believe that reading and writing is an essential life skill and we are dedicated to enabling our children to become enthused, engaged and successful lifelong readers and writers. To support this, we practise the ‘Little Wandle: Letters and Sounds Revised’ Phonics scheme and implement the following: The best way of learning something is to do it and then teach someone else. These letters and sounds flashcards are designed to make KS1 children speak out loud and challenge their friends to do the same.Secondary Col 3 Anthologies for KS3 to KS5 English White Rose Maths Secure Science for GCSE Reimagine KS3 English KS3 Science Now Collins Classroom Classics We use the ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised’ assessments to identify the gaps in their phonic knowledge and teach to these using the keep-up resources at pace.

The continuous cursive version is perfect for our LKS2 phonics interventions and fits in alongside our handwriting scheme also.

Listen to them read the book. Remember to give them lots of praise – celebrate their success! If they can’t read a word, read it to them. After they have finished, talk about the book together. Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home.
