About this deal

An eerie, dangerous landscape, a wealthy family, a children’s nurse, a controlling husband, and characters with secrets greet us in this delicious, Gothic novel.

Mrs England - Stacey Halls Mrs England - Stacey Halls

Gradually the truth about the many secrets lurking within the England household emerges, revealing a chilling picture of deception, manipulation and control. If you love the gothic elements of novels such as Rebecca or Jane Eyre, you are sure to enjoy Mrs England. Halls is very good at drawing characters, with Ruby aware of herself and others around her, although first impressions are sometimes misguided. Mrs England’s birth family are named Greatrex and are all unappealing, and rather homogenous. Perhaps this is an intentional contrast with an otherwise diverse cast, each of whom play an individual role in an intriguing book. Mrs England by Stacey Halls is one of my most highly anticipated releases for 2021 and I was thrilled when it delivered on all of my hopes and expectations. From the stunning cover design, the enticing premise, the Edwardian era setting and location at Hardcastle House in West Yorkshire, Mrs England is everything I love in historical fiction. I read because books are a form of transportation, of teaching, and of connection! Books take us to places we’ve never been, they teach us about our world, and they help us to understand human experience.” The strength in this book is three-fold - its mysterious Gothic setting, the menacing feel surrounding the England family and the strength of Ruby's character. I loved Ruby's determination and capability as a children's nurse and the secrets from her past add to the mystery, but unfortunately, her story isn't woven into the main thread, leaving readers to wait until close to the end of the story to learn what they are. The pacing is slow but deliciously eerie, my only beef is that a romantic element felt too forced to be believable.

Mrs England — The Portico Library

Ruby is concerned for the family as a whole but as strange events start to occur, Ruby feels quite isolated. The other servants ignore her and she’s not sure who she can trust. Ruby has secrets of her own and is desperate that the events from her mysterious past don’t catch up with her. Mrs England by Stacey Halls Review: My Opinion Secrets: We get the sense early in the story that there are many dark secrets. These secrets drive the story as we wonder whom we can trust and where the real danger lies.I've read both of Stacey Hall's previous novels: The Familiars and The Foundling, so knew I would enjoy this one, and I did. Still though, of the three, The Familiars is my favorite. It's the elements of witchcraft in The Familiars, that and the atmospheric setting, that make it so. I loved the character of Ruby and found her to be another strong female protagonist, something that the author is becoming known for. I enjoyed how the author dropped hints throughout the story about both Ruby’s past and the strange goings-on at Hardcastle House. I tried to piece it all together but there were twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end. Having said all of that there is a real twist in the last sentence which makes the reader re-evaluate the whole of the book. Simmering with slow-burning menace, Mrs England is a portrait of an Edwardian marriage, weaving an enthralling story of men and women, power and control, courage, truth and the very darkest deception. Set against the atmospheric landscape of West Yorkshire, Stacey Halls’ third novel proves her one of the most exciting and compelling new storytellers of our times. Review Mrs England is the third book from historical fiction writer Stacey Halls. I read and love both The Familiars and The Foundling, so this was an incredibly anticipated release for me. The story follows Nurse Ruby May a graduate of the Norland Institute. When she is forced to leave her position she knows she needs to find another as soon as possible. When the opportunity comes up to be a nurse to the four England children, Ruby takes the position immediately. When she arrives in Yorkshire she soon finds things aren’t right with the family. Mrs England is detached and mysterious, and the servants won’t talk to her. As Ruby spends more time with the family, she uncovers more than she could possibly imagine.

Mrs England: The award-winning Sunday Times bestseller from

The authors writing is fantastic, very cleverly written. However they just delved too deep into the unimportant ‘fillers’ of the book and didn’t spend enough time talking about any of the interesting moments throughout. subiectul. – Inga Vesper, a The Long, Long Afternoon szerzője

Overall, I have to say the reason why I’m giving Mrs. England three stars is because of the author’s writing skill. If the quality of the writing had been a little worse, I would have stopped reading this story a long time ago. Her first position did not last long because she couldn't leave England for America with this family. The school found her another position at the remote Hardcastle House taking care of the four children of Mr. and Mrs. England. Egyszerűen lenyűgöző. Vészjósló, csodálatosan megírt és kitűnő, hátborzongató Edward-kori történet.” – Daily Mail
